The Science
and Design for Maritime Spatial Planning curriculum of the master’s
degree in Planning and urban design
The two-year study
programme integrates scientific and design-based disciplines in an innovative
and multidisciplinary manner, covering oceanography, marine biological
sciences, land and environmental planning, coastal planning, and landscape
architecture.
This new study programme combines theoretical knowledge with workshops and practice-based learning, providing students with a comprehensive set of skills and techniques for maritime spatial planning.
The course trains professionals with the skills needed to work as consultants for private economic operators engaged in maritime and coastal zone activities as well as for public sector entities. This includes roles within public administration, particularly for State, territorial bodies, agencies, and port authorities, which require new expertise due to the obligation to create and enforce maritime spatial plans established at the international level by numerous national laws and at the European level by the Directive 89/2014/EU.
This emerging professional profile, which is in high demand internationally, emphasizes innovative and complex system thinking. Graduates will understand the importance of maritime space as a new frontier for sustainable growth and will appreciate the tangible and intangible values associated with it.
Upon completing the
two-year programme, graduates in Science and Design for Maritime Spatial Planning will be eligible to take the Italian State
exam and join Section A of the Board of Architects, Planners, Landscapers, and
Conservators (Spatial Planning section).
